The good news is that choosing and applying interfacing doesn't have to be complicated.

What is fusible interfacing?
Fusible interfacing is a layer of material designed to give fabric additional support, stability or structure.
Unlike sew-in interfacing, fusible interfacing has a heat-activated adhesive on one side. When you apply heat and pressure using an iron, the adhesive bonds the interfacing to the fabric.
It effectively becomes a supporting layer attached to your fabric.

What does fusible mean?
The word fusible simply means that the interfacing can be attached using heat.
The adhesive is normally applied to one side of the interfacing in small dots. When heated, the adhesive melts and bonds to the fabric. Once cooled, the interfacing remains attached — meaning you don't normally need to stitch fusible interfacing into place.
Which side of fusible interfacing goes against the fabric?
This is one of the most common questions from people using interfacing for the first time.
The adhesive side of fusible interfacing is normally the side with the small, shiny adhesive dots. That side goes against the wrong side of your fabric.
The fabric should be placed with its right side facing down, with the adhesive side of the interfacing against the fabric.

What are the different types of fusible interfacing?
There isn't just one type of fusible interfacing — they can differ in several ways.
1. Woven fusible interfacing
Woven interfacing is made from woven fibres, giving it a construction more similar to fabric. It can be a good choice when you want to add support while retaining a relatively natural fabric feel.

2. Non-woven fusible interfacing
Non-woven interfacing is made from fibres that have been bonded together rather than woven. There is a huge range of non-woven fusible interfacing, from very lightweight products to much firmer varieties.
Popular non-woven fusible interfacings include:

Non-woven fusible interfacing can be particularly useful for bags, accessories, collars, cuffs, waistbands, craft projects and general fabric reinforcement.
3. Fusible fleece
Fusible fleece is thicker and softer than standard interfacing. It can add both body and a soft padded feel to fabric.
It's often used for bags, quilting, pouches, fabric baskets, home accessories and soft furnishings. The Pellon 971 Thermolam Plus fusible fleece is a popular choice.
Because fusible fleece is considerably thicker than ordinary interfacing, it should not normally be treated as a direct substitute for lightweight garment interfacing.
What weight of fusible interfacing should I use?
This is one of the most important decisions you'll make. The general rule is:
The heavier the interfacing, the more structure it will add.
However, heavier isn't necessarily better. If you use an interfacing that is too heavy for your fabric, you can end up with a garment or project that feels stiff, bulky or unnatural. If you use one that's too light, you may not get enough support.
Lightweight interfacing
Suitable for projects where you want subtle reinforcement without significantly changing the fabric — often used for lightweight clothing, thin cotton, blouses and delicate fabrics. Try our charcoal lightweight or white lightweight fusible interfacing.
Medium-weight interfacing
Provides more noticeable support — often used for shirts, dresses, waistbands, medium-weight cotton, bags and accessories. The Vlieseline H250 and our charcoal medium weight are popular choices.
Heavyweight interfacing

Always check the manufacturer's recommendations because "lightweight", "medium-weight" and "heavyweight" aren't universal measurements across every manufacturer.
How do I choose the right fusible interfacing?
Rather than starting with the interfacing, start with your fabric and your project. Ask yourself these five questions.
1. What am I making?
A blouse needs a very different level of support from a structured handbag.
2. What fabric am I using?
Consider the fabric's weight, thickness, drape, stretch and fibre content.
3. How much structure do I need?
Do you simply want to stop the fabric stretching, or do you want it to become noticeably firmer?
4. Do I want the fabric to remain soft?
If yes, choose a lighter interfacing.
5. Does the interfacing need to stretch?
If you're working with stretch fabric, you need to choose an interfacing that is compatible with the fabric's stretch and intended use.

How to apply fusible interfacing
Applying fusible interfacing is straightforward, but there are a few important things to remember.
Step 1: Pre-test your fabric
Before applying interfacing to your project, test it on a scrap of the same fabric — especially if the fabric is expensive or delicate, or you've never used the interfacing before.
Step 2: Cut the interfacing
Cut the interfacing to the required shape. For many projects, you will cut the interfacing slightly smaller than the fabric piece or use the pattern's recommended seam allowance.
Step 3: Identify the adhesive side
Place the adhesive side against the wrong side of the fabric. The adhesive side usually has small raised or shiny dots. Make sure you don't accidentally place the adhesive side directly against your iron.
Step 4: Cover the interfacing
Place a pressing cloth over the interfacing and fabric if recommended by the manufacturer. A pressing cloth can help protect both your fabric and your iron from stray adhesive.
Step 5: Apply heat and pressure
Use the temperature, pressing time and technique specified by the manufacturer. Don't assume that every fusible interfacing should be applied at the same temperature — different products have different requirements.
Some instructions require you to press rather than iron back and forth, hold the iron in place for a specific amount of time, work in sections, or allow the interfacing to cool before moving the fabric.
Why shouldn't I slide the iron around?
When applying some fusible interfacings, the manufacturer recommends pressing and lifting the iron rather than moving it back and forth. Sliding the iron can cause the interfacing or fabric to shift, and can create wrinkles or an uneven bond. Always follow the specific application instructions supplied with your interfacing.
Let the interfacing cool
Once you've applied the interfacing, give it time to cool before handling the fabric too much. The adhesive needs time to fully set — moving or stretching the fabric while the adhesive is still warm can potentially weaken the bond or cause the interfacing to shift.
What happens if fusible interfacing doesn't stick?
If your interfacing isn't bonding properly, check the following before assuming the product is faulty:
- Was the adhesive side against the fabric? This is the first thing to check.
- Was the iron hot enough? If the temperature was too low, the adhesive may not have activated correctly.
- Did you apply enough pressure? Some products require firm pressure as well as heat.
- Did you press for long enough? Different products require different pressing times.
- Did you use steam when you shouldn't? Some interfacings have specific instructions regarding steam.
- Did you wash the fabric first? Some fabrics benefit from pre-washing to remove finishes that could affect adhesion.

Can fusible interfacing be removed?
Sometimes, but it isn't always easy. Once the adhesive has bonded to the fabric, removing the interfacing can potentially leave adhesive residue or damage the fabric. This is another reason why testing first is so important.

Woven vs non-woven fusible interfacing
