Vlieseline G700 vs Hemline HN100: Which Woven Interfacing Should You Choose?

When choosing woven fusible interfacing for dressmaking, two products you may come across are Vlieseline G700 and Hemline HN100.

Both are woven cotton interfacings designed to add support and stability to garments, particularly smaller sections such as collars and cuffs.

But are they the same? Is one better than the other? And does it really matter which brand you choose?

In this guide, we'll compare Vlieseline G700 and Hemline HN100, look at their specifications, application instructions and intended uses, and help you decide which is right for your next sewing project.

What is the difference between Vlieseline G700 and Hemline HN100?

The interesting thing about these two products is just how similar their published specifications are.

Both are made from 100% cotton, both have a weight of 90gsm and both are 90cm wide.

They are woven fusible interfacings, meaning they have a fabric-like construction and are designed to bond to the reverse side of your fabric using heat.

Based on the manufacturers' published technical specifications, these two products are closely matched in their headline characteristics.

However, matching weight and composition do not necessarily mean that the finished feel or bonding performance will be identical. The adhesive formulation and exact finish can differ between manufacturers.

1. Vlieseline G700 – an established woven cotton interfacing

Vlieseline G700 is a well-known woven cotton fusible interfacing for dressmaking and garment construction.

Made from 100% cotton, it weighs 90gsm and measures 90cm wide.

Vlieseline describes G700 as a heavyweight fusible woven interlining, while recommending it for light- to medium-weight fabrics. The weight description refers to the interfacing, not the weight of fabric it is intended to support.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Shirt and blouse collars
  • Cuffs
  • Garment facings
  • Small sections of clothing requiring additional support
  • Dressmaking projects where a woven interfacing is preferred

One of its advantages is that it retains its shape after washing, with a recommended washing temperature of up to 60°C.

Shop Vlieseline G700 and compare available lengths.

How to apply Vlieseline G700

  1. Cut the interfacing lengthwise, following the direction of the thread.
  2. Place it against the wrong side of your fabric, with the coated adhesive side facing down.
  3. Cover with a damp pressing cloth.
  4. Press section by section for approximately 12 seconds. Do not slide the iron.
  5. Once fused, lay the fabric pieces flat and allow them to cool for approximately 30 minutes so the adhesive bond can stabilise.

Always test on a fabric offcut before applying to your finished project.

2. Hemline HN100 – a medium-weight woven cotton alternative

Hemline HN100 is another 100% cotton woven fusible interfacing, designed for adding stability and support to garment details.

It also weighs 90gsm and measures 90cm wide.

Hemline describes HN100 as a standard medium-weight cotton interfacing, suitable for light- to medium-weight fabrics.

Its intended applications include:

  • Shirt and blouse collars
  • Cuffs
  • Garment facings
  • Smaller sections of clothing requiring additional stability
  • General dressmaking projects

Like G700, HN100 is washable up to 60°C and is designed to retain its shape.

Shop Hemline HN100 in white, with a 10cm × 10cm sample, metre lengths and a 25-metre roll available as buying options.

How to apply Hemline HN100

  1. Cut the interfacing carefully, following the direction of the woven grain.
  2. Place it against the wrong side of your fabric, with the coated adhesive side facing down.
  3. Cover with a damp pressing cloth.
  4. Press and hold the iron in position for approximately 10–12 seconds.
  5. Lift the iron and repeat across the remaining sections. Do not slide the iron.
  6. Lay the fused fabric pieces flat and allow them to cool for approximately 30 minutes.

Always test on a scrap of your chosen fabric before applying to your finished project.

3. Are Vlieseline G700 and Hemline HN100 interchangeable?

This is probably the most important question for anyone following a sewing pattern that specifies a particular brand or product code.

The published specifications are similar:

  • Both are 100% cotton.
  • Both weigh 90gsm.
  • Both are 90cm wide.
  • Both are woven fusible interfacings.
  • Both are designed for light- to medium-weight fabrics.
  • Both are suitable for collars and cuffs.
  • Both have a recommended washing temperature of up to 60°C.

This makes them comparable options for many garment-making applications, but not guaranteed identical substitutes.

They are sold under different brands, and their adhesive formulations and bonding characteristics may differ.

If your pattern specifically recommends Vlieseline G700, you may find Hemline HN100 a suitable alternative, but we always recommend testing on a fabric sample first to make sure you achieve the finish you want.

The same applies when using G700 in place of HN100. Test the fused fabric for feel, drape and support before committing to your project.

4. Which one should you buy?

There isn't a clear technical winner based on the published specifications alone. Both offer a woven cotton construction, the same published weight and width, and similar intended applications.

There are a few things worth considering when making your choice.

Choose Vlieseline G700 if:

  • Your sewing pattern specifically recommends G700.
  • You already know and prefer Vlieseline products.
  • You want to use a recognised woven interfacing from an established manufacturer.

Choose Hemline HN100 if:

  • Your pattern recommends a medium-weight woven cotton interfacing and your sample test gives the required result.
  • You prefer Hemline products.
  • You want another established branded option with similar published specifications to G700.

For many everyday dressmaking projects, either could be a suitable starting point. Your fabric choice and the result you want to achieve are just as important as the brand.

5. What about other woven cotton interfacings?

G700 and HN100 aren't the only options available. At The Yorkshire Sewing Guy, we stock woven interfacing from Vlieseline, Hemline and Pellon, alongside our own Yorkshire Sewing Guy cotton woven interfacing.

Depending on your project, you may also want to consider:

  • Vlieseline B700: a woven cotton interfacing featuring a biodegradable adhesive. Check its own care guidance, as its recommended washing temperature differs from G700.
  • Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex cut from the roll: an American woven cotton fusible interfacing for sewing, bags and quilting, available in half-metre increments or as a small sample. It is also available as a separate 20″ × 1 yard pre-pack.
  • Yorkshire Sewing Guy cotton woven interfacing: a wider, value-focused alternative, available in white and black.

Each has its own characteristics, widths and application recommendations, so compare the specifications and test before substituting one product for another.
